While things were slower over the Christmas break I have scoped out a few fishing related projects and venues for the coming year. One of those projects for the summer is how to build a wine barrel smoker to hot and cold smoke fish, meat and cheese. Using a 225 L (59 gallon) wine barrel produces a beautiful smoker with plenty of space for smoking either on racks or hanging from hooks. A typical 225 L wine barrel has the following dimensions:
Body diameter 69cm/27.16”
Head diameter 56cm/22”
Stave length 95cm/37.40”
Stave thickness 27/31
Metal hoops 6 or 8 pieces 40/1.57”-40/1.57”-50/2.16”
Weight 50kg/110lb
Below are the best of the YouTube videos showing you how to go about it with various features and designs. I have sourced all of the components in the UK and reckon it will cost about £300 in components to build depending on the level of finish and finishing touches that you go for. I will post more information on the building thereof when I have a go later in the year.
