Dung fly

posted in: Entomology, Science | 0

The yellow dung fly (Scathophaga stercoraria) can be a significant terrestrial where animal droppings (horse, sheep, cow) are present in pasture next to rivers and lakes during the spring/summer months. These flies are about 10 mm in length and have golden to yellowish furry bodies (males). The adults feed on insects on the dung, lay eggs in the dung while the larvae feed on the dung itself. Their distribution seems to mirror the key animal distributions in the country, primarily the sheep distribution.
