The artic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) population in the lake district has always interested me along with the traditional fishing methods used to catch these deep water salmonids, purported to have become trapped in UK lakes at the end of the last ice age 12 000 years ago. I was doing some searching on the topic the other day and came across these three fabulous movies which are well worth a watch as they outline the reasons for decline, conservation efforts and fishing techniques. The first is a magnificent video of the work undertaken in Ennerdale to support and revive the charr population:

The second is a stunningly shot video about the charr in Lake Windermere:

I have always fancied fishing for them using the old traditional techniques even though the odds on success aren’t what they were. I was perusing the Wild Trout Trust auction lots and noted that there is a lot for 2 rods to go fishing for charr on Coniston Water with Bill Gibson and Jon Beer. If anybody fancies including a joint bid for this lot then drop me an email please. The 3rd video is of Bill Gibson fishing Coniston Water:
If you would like to read more about the charr populations in Scotland and the research work undertaken by Dr David Fraser and others then the following article from Salmo Trutta is worth a read. Please support the work of the Trust by becoming a member or making a donation e.g. I have set them up as my Amazon Smile charity.
