How to draw and paint a trout

Being in lock-down during the COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to explore other aspects of our hobby/obsession. I have always fancied drawing and painting our quarry and envy those lucky enough to possess the gift and skill set to do so. My interest was really piqued by Muriel Fosters fishing diary, which I bought a few years ago and is beautifully illustrated with fishing landscapes, fish, flies and lures alongside her diary entries. While I am confident that this gift passed me by, I have never really had any tuition, even at school as this was not on offer at my school, so my level of artistic talent is really an unknown quantity. My youngest daughter Rachel is one of those lucky few that has an unbelievable gift and a passion for art that is simply astounding. Her collection of art materials is also quite impressive.

So I decided to give it a go, using a YouTube step by step video and Rachel to guide me as to which pencils, pens and materials to use. The picture above is my first ever piece of art, done in colour pencil. While there is major room for improvement, the result is promising enough to tempt me to have another go. So if you have always wondered if you could do it, then give it a try, you won’t know if you don’t try and may surprise yourself.

The videos below are the best of those in YouTube and cover a variety of media – colour pencils, sketching, paints and digital art. Enjoy and have fun.
